Measles outbreak triggers quarantine orders at two Los Angeles universities

Some students and employees at two Los Angeles universities have been quarantined due to possible contact with the measles virus, a manager said Thursday.

The University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) and California State University in Los Angeles both announced orders this week.

UCLA officials learned Monday from the Los Angeles County Public Health Department (LACDPH) that one student "had contracted measles" and had stayed on campus while he was contagious, announced the university in a statement released Wednesday.

Since then, UCLA has contacted other potentially affected people, officials said.

"Most of these people have since been eliminated, but we are still waiting for the medical records of 119 students and eight faculty members to determine if they are immunized against measles," the statement said. "As a result, the LACDPH decided to quarantine these people until their immunity is determined."

Quarantine should last about 24 to 48 hours "until proof of immunity is established," but some quarantines could last up to a week, officials said.

California State University in Los Angeles released Thursday an update on a "potential exhibition" at the library between 11 am and 3 pm April 11th.

As a result, health officials asked "Cal State LA employees" who might have been exposed "to provide immunization records or have their immunity checked" and to refrain from commuting to work.

"These employees, including student workers, were sent home quarantined and ordered to stay at home and avoid contact with other people as much as possible," the update said.

Seventy-one students and 127 staff members are quarantined at California State University in Los Angeles, school officials said, according to the Associated Press.

Quarantine orders come as a small measles outbreak hit Los Angeles County with at least five confirmed cases linked to overseas trips. The state recorded 38 measles cases from Thursday, up from 11 at about the same time last year, said Dr. Karen Smith, director of the California Department of Public Health, Associated Press.

In the United States, measles has reportedly climbed to its highest level in 25 years, closing 700 cases this year in a resurgence largely due to misinformation between parents to vaccination. About three-quarters of this year's diseases in the United States were contracted in New York State.

The vaccine, which became available in the 1960s, is considered safe and highly effective, and as a result, measles was declared virtually eliminated in the United States in 2000.

Associated Press contributed to this report.
