MediaTek has just completed its annual summit where the company reported on a wide range of topics ranging from global marketing strategies to R&D and everything in between. This is our first time attending the summit and for obvious reasons this year’s meeting was held virtually, but we couldn’t have been more excited to attend. While there has been a lot of exciting industry news regarding MediaTek’s Dimensity chips, 5G, AI, and more, we’ve come for Chromebooks and chipmaker ARM hasn’t disappointed.
For months, we’ve been tracking the new Asurada baseboard that’s being developed around the unexpected MediaTek MT8192 octa-core processor, but we haven’t had a lot of solid CPU information so far. Additionally, MediaTek recently revealed that the company will be releasing another processor that is based on a 6nm process, which would be a first for any Chrome OS device so far. The MT8195 was little more than a name until today’s announcement where MediaTek laid out all the details for the two processors to be launched in 2021.
MediaTek has continued to move forward in the Chrome OS space with its latest octa-core processor that powers the Lenovo Chromebook Duet and other devices. The MT8183 has proven to be a capable processor for budget Chromebooks, but MediaTek is now looking to break into the premium market with its latest chipsets.

MediaTek MT8192
The first processor detailed today is the MT8192 which we have been tracking for some time in the Asurada base card. This octa-core processor is built using a 7nm process which happens to be the same chip size as Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8c compute platform that powers a number of high-end Windows laptops. . The MT8192 includes Arm Cortex-A76 and four Arm Cortex-A55 cores with the familiar big.LITTLE ARM architecture to balance power and efficiency. It is also equipped with an Arm Mali-G57 GPU which boasts five cores and can handle 4K HDR content and push two Full HD displays. MediaTek states that the MT8192 is capable of 120Hz refresh rates at FullHD + resolutions.
The developers of Chrome OS have been working with this processor for months now, and MediaTek says we can expect to see devices on the market at some point in Q2 2021. We don’t have a benchmark for this processor at this time. stadium, but it’s plausible the MT8192 could boast of enough power to find its place in EDU and consumer devices in all price ranges up to flagship devices.
MediaTek MT8195
As expected, MediaTek formalized its next-generation 6nm processor at today’s summit. This processor features the same four small A55 cores, but expands the four larger cores to the new Cortex-A78 for “high performance computing” tasks. MediaTek has the same Arm-Mali G57 GPU as the MT8192 and can support up to three displays connected simultaneously. MediaTek touts the chip as its “flagship” Chromebook processor and it stands to reason that this 6nm chip could give the company a solid foothold in the Chrome OS space.
The MT8195 is squarely aimed at the premium Chromebook segment and it’s built on the same architecture that hasn’t even arrived on the most powerful smartphones available. The Cortex-A78 is said to have a 30% power increase over the previous A77 found in the Snapdragon 865 that powers most of the current generation flagship smartphones. This will make a very powerful and energy efficient Chromebook. We’ll bring you more coverage from the summit and what to expect from MediaTek in the future. The MT8195 will launch in the Chrome OS device around mid-2021.
