Robert Saleh’s expected offensive coordinator with the Jets has strong family roots in the NFL.
Mike LaFleur, the younger brother of Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur, is reportedly coming with Saleh from the San Francisco 49ers to New York, according to The Post’s Brian Costello.
LaFleur, 33, has been on Kyle Shanahan’s staff with the Niners for four seasons as the team’s passing coordinator. He also served as a receivers coach for his first two years with the team before Wes Welker was hired to fill that role in 2019.
LaFleur, a former quarterback at Elmhurst College (Illinois), previously worked with Shanahan as an offensive intern in Cleveland (2014) and as an offensive assistant in Atlanta (2015-16) when Shanahan was the offensive coordinator of those NFL teams.
Shanahan joked in December that he told Saleh – then the Niners’ defensive coordinator – that he couldn’t take any San Francisco assistants with him if he landed a head coaching job.
“I keep telling him he’s not allowed to take anyone with me,” Shanahan said. “Sometimes I can relax a bit on this, but I usually set the bar really low, and then we’ll see what happens next.”
Matt LaFleur requested to interview his younger brother for the opening of the Green Bay Offensive Coordinator in 2019, but Shanahan declined the request. The NFL instituted a rule in 2020 preventing teams from blocking offensive assistants from interviewing for coordinator positions.
Matt LaFleur was the Packers’ head coach for two seasons, leading them to the NFC Championship game last season and a 13-3 mark this year. They are the No. 1 seed in the NFC overall standings and face the Los Angeles Rams in the divisional round on Saturday.
