Fancy a drink in Portland? Be prepared to prove that you have received a COVID vaccine.
As the Delta variant continues to flare up across Oregon, sparking groundbreaking cases among those who received the vaccine and hospitalizations and deaths among those who did not, a new coalition of bars is emerging. is grouped together to require proof of vaccination at the gate.
Hosted by Teardrop Cocktail Lounge owner Daniel Shoemaker, the new 15-bar group, which plans to add up to 30 more members in the coming days, seeks to protect its customers and staff by only allowing guests vaccinated indoors. Each bar in the coalition will create their own protocols around what constitutes evidence, but generally speaking, a vaccine card or photo of it should suffice. Most will continue to provide outdoor seating for all.
The new coalition was formed after similar groups in San Francisco to Seattle gathered hundreds of West Coast bars last week. Some have faced a backlash from social media, but Shoemaker expects his in-person guests to broadly support the rule, which has been in effect in Teardrop’s adjacent Crybaby lounge throughout the summer. . Meanwhile, Shoemaker and others are keeping a close watch as New York City prepares to begin implementing its own vaccine mandate for indoor activities at restaurants, gyms and theaters.
The groundbreaking cases and the delta variant represent the final hurdle for restaurants and bars in Oregon, even those where vaccination is a condition of employment, as they continue to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic.
