The Ryder Cup tradition of meeting partners from Team USA and Team Europe has been nearly ruined by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The wives and girlfriends of the European Ryder Cup team have been exempted from US travel restrictions to travel to America for the matches, according to The Sun.
On Monday, Padraig Harrington’s 12-member European team were reportedly joined by their relatives on a flight from Heathrow to the United States – where the 43rd annual Ryder Cup will be held at the Whistling Straits Golf Course in Wisconsin from Friday.
The players’ families have reportedly obtained waivers from the US State Department, following “landmark talks” between the US Embassy, the PGA and the European Tour.
Due to coronavirus restrictions, European and UK citizens are currently not allowed to enter America. In November, travelers will be able to enter the United States with proof of full vaccination against the coronavirus.
The Ryder Cup WAGs were presented at the opening ceremony on Tuesday, following a team photoshoot, according to the website.
They will spend the weekend attending sporting events, supporting players and getting to know other wives and girlfriends.
Meet the WAGs of Team Europe:
Jon Rahm and eight other members of Team Europe are married, including Rory McIlroy, Tyrrell Hatton, Paul Casey, Lee Westwood, Tommy Fleetwood, Shane Lowry, Sergio Garcia and Ian Poulter. It is not known if Viktor Hovland, Matthew Fitzpatrick and Bernd Wiesberger have any partners.
Rahm married Kelly Cahill in 2019 in Bilbao, Spain, near his hometown of Barrika. They welcomed their first child together in April. College lovers met at Arizona State University, where Cahill competed in track and field.
McIlroy and his wife Erica Stoll have a romance straight out of a romantic comedy. The duo met at the 2012 Ryder Cup, while she was an employee of the PGA of America. Mcllroy slept too long and needed a ride to the course, and Stoll helped him. The two got engaged in December 2015 and tied the knot in April 2017 at Ashford Castle in Ireland. Mcllroy announcement the birth of the couple’s first child on social media in September 2020 – a baby girl named Poppy Kennedy McIlroy.
Garcia is married to Angela Akins, a former TCU and Texas golfer. Akins, who previously worked for the Golf Channel, is the daughter of former Texas Longhorns quarterback Marty Akins, and first cousin of newly retired Saints quarterback Drew Brees. The couple have two children together – daughter Azalea Adele and son Enzo.
Casey is married to Pollyanna Woodward, a popular British TV host, known for her presence on “The Gadget Show”. She has also appeared on VH1’s “Wannabe with Chanelle” and made it to the final 13 on “Popstars the Rivals”. Woodward was one of the 10 finalists for Miss England. The couple met in 2011 and married in 2015. They have two children: a son, Lex and a daughter, Astaria.
Westwood and his wife Helen Storey work well together. She’s been his caddy since 2018 – although their son is on the bag this week. Westwood and Storey covered the May 2021 issue of “Golf” magazine, where she posed on her back. The couple said “yes” in Las Vegas in June 2021, and announced the news in a tweet with photos of their wedding.
Fleetwood’s wife, Clare Craig, has been his manager since 2015. She was previously Vice President of Hambric Europe, an athlete management company. The couple married in 2017 in the Bahamas and share a son together, Franklin Fleetwood. Craig has two children from a previous marriage.
Hatton and his wife Emily Braisher were forced to marry alone in May due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The longtime couple got married in Asheville, North Carolina.
Lowry married Wendy Honner, a nurse, in New York City in April 2016 – after meeting on a ‘random night out’ in 2012. Honner gave birth to the couple’s daughter, Iris, in March 2017.
Poulter and Katie Gadsden met when she was a nurse. The couple have four children: Aimee-Leigh, Luke, Lily-Mai and Joshua.
