The year of the pandemic has changed the way people use e-commerce – online shopping numbers have reached new highs, meaning there is an abundance of packaging waste ending up in stores. landfills. Cardboard has its own merits as a packaging material, but the amount of waste it generates goes hand in hand. Fortunately, there is a Berlin brand called LivingPackets, which has devised an ingenious solution to minimize the waste associated with shipping.

The company has devised an alternative to cardboard boxes and it is simply called “The Box”. Four years in development, it was revealed again at CES 2021 with some improvements. The Box is a sustainable option for the e-commerce industry and can allegedly be used to ship up to 1000 times. In contrast, cardboard boxes have a unique lifespan from the point of packaging to the point of delivery. If the municipality of the place of delivery recycles, the cardboard finds a second life; otherwise, it wastes and harms the environment. In addition to the durability aspect, the perfectly designed “box” is equivalent to about two shoe boxes and can be used to ship a large number of products. Interestingly, the box can even fold flat to ship important documents or a laptop. Traditionally, sending important paper by courier / courier is not at all safe – you can’t be sure how it’s handled along the way – and you just have to rely on the company’s tracking mechanism. logistics to find out where your package arrived.

The Box will revolutionize this when it goes into mass production around May of this year. The inventive box is integrated with GPS to allow the sender / receiver to track the package from point A to point B and everywhere in between in real time using a dedicated app on a smart device. Simply place the item inside the box, close it, enter the destination, and the built-in e-ink screen will serve as a traditional printing label to update its travel status.

LivingPackets’ Box is currently in beta testing with partner companies, which include e-commerce stores, logistics, and even insurance companies. To ensure that the merchandise in the packaging is safe – not only because it is traceable – also safe during transport, the box includes temperature and shock sensors. There is also a provision to include a camera inside in the future, which would allow people to keep an eye on the product they are shipping in the box packaging.

Since this packaging solution sounds too good to be true, most of us would instantly consider it expensive and only for the elite. However, the eco-friendly and innovative box is quite affordable, in fact, the company wants to keep the costs as low as traditional cardboard packaging. At the end of its lifecycle, the Box will be repaired and refurbished to “be used 1,000 more times,” says LivingPackets. Offering to eliminate up to 90% of carbon dioxide emissions, the box has a retention mechanism inside, which means that not only is the cardboard replaced, the bubble plastic filled with air, the foam polystyrene, etc. used to secure the products inside the packaging box are also eliminated. Now this is fabulous – I can’t wait to see this new package land on my doorstep one beautiful morning!
