Mega Gyarados is a Dark and Water type the boss Mega Raid. Optimal raid counters will include powerful Electric Grass Combat Thumbtack and Fairy types, with a fairly wide range of different counters available to help you defeat it.
Depending on your levels and counters, we recommend 3-5 high-level trainers, and more if you don’t have optimal teams.
This guide will walk you through how to beat this fan favorite Mega, along with his optimal stats, moves, and CP range.
Mega Gyarados counters
Since Shadow Pokémon are extremely expensive to power up and require specific events to remove Frustration with a ChargeTM, they will NOT be listed as raid counters in this article. That being said, if you have the shadow form of a Raid Meter Pokémon listed under Power and TMed, then use it.
Let’s take a look at the best raid counters for Mega Gyarados:

With a wide range of counters and a few different type weaknesses thanks to it Water and Dark double strike, most trainers should be able to put together a strong scoring team. Lots of strong counters have organized community events or days which helps! Reach the mighty Grass Electric Combat Fairy and Thumbtack type Pokémon. So many of these counters are incredibly useful and versatile in terms of PVE, with the likes of Machamp, Togekiss, and Zekrom being a name we see popping up over and over again.
For more budget counters, you can check out the full list of counters here, but Roserade, Hariyama, Torterra, Genesect normal, and Sirfetch would all make an appearance, so keep them in mind.
How to get Mega Gyarados
You cannot catch Gyarados in his Mega Evolved Raid Form. The mega raid boss is still catchable in its base form, and as such the CP ranges are for a regular Gyarados.
Gyarados can be captured with the following CP values:
- 1855 – 1937 CP no weather boost
- 2319 – 2422 CP boosted by Rainy or Fog weather boost
To get Mega Gyarados you will need 200 Mega Energy for the initial evolution, then 40 Mega Energy to evolve the same Gyarados again in the future. Mega Energy can be obtained through Mega Gyarados Raids, and once you’ve evolved Mega Gyarados, you can earn 5 Mega Energy per candy while walking it around like your buddy. You can browse any Magikarp or Gyarados to earn Mega Energy, as long as you have already developed one to save it to your Mega Pokédex.
Shiny Gyarados
Like all Mega Raid Bosses, you can catch the shiny version of Gyarados during a raid, and also potentially in the wild, if you can find it! Gyarados has a slight gender difference in regular, shiny sprites, with his whiskers changing color.

To optimize DPS Bite and Hydro Pump are the way to go. If you need your strongest Water attacking type, Waterfall and Hydro Pump are preferred for DPS, and for a Dark type attacker Bite and Crunch. Mega Gyarados does not have Dragon by typing, but if you want to use it as Dragon attacking type, you will need the movement inherited from Dragon Tail with Outrage as the charge move.
Conclusion
Mega Gyarados is a Pokémon that regardless of its stats is going to be a Mega that people want in their teams, Gyarados is a fan favorite! He has a huge CP stat and a high attack stat of 292, which makes him a great Water attacking type. He has great weaknesses, lose that the type he has in his regular form means he’s much weaker for Grass types than before.
Mega Gyarados isn’t generally considered one of the best Megas, but with such a cool design, and so many trainers with a soft spot in their hearts for this big, shiny red beast, does it really matter? It will be great to do a strong raid Fire types, and can be a help against Psychic and Ghost types, including Mega Mewtwo forms, whenever they become available.
