The United States women’s soccer team are hoping for a rebound victory in their second Olympic game against New Zealand on Saturday after losing in a shutout to Sweden earlier in the week.
The team were among those who did not attend the Olympic Games opening ceremony in Tokyo on Friday night. Megan Rapinoe appeared on the NBC show as the ceremony unfolded. She was on the bus with her teammates returning from soccer training.

“Obviously we can’t be there, I don’t know who scheduled us to train at that time,” Rapinoe joked with hosts Mike Tirico and Savannah Guthrie. “But everyone on the United States team will keep it for us.”

Rapinoe’s fiancée, Sue Bird, was one of the American team’s flag bearers. Rapinoe noted that Bird doesn’t necessarily like the global spotlight but was happy for her.
“I feel like I can participate in it, even if I don’t deserve enough to be the flag bearer,” she said.
Rapinoe and the football team weren’t the only ones missing the ceremony.

Simone Biles and the rest of the All-Star Gymnastics team did not make it to the stadium as they prepared for their first events on Saturday as well as COVID fears. Another member of the team has already tested positive for the virus earlier in the week. The team was staying in a hotel instead of the Olympic Village as a precaution.
