On Tuesday, Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, visit Waves for Change, an innovative charity that takes children out of the violent neighborhoods where they live and teaches them how to surf and, hopefully, heal.
They live a few kilometers away, but the contrast could not be more striking.
"It's better here because they're shooting where we live," said Chloe, 12, "They shoot, they rape, they abuse people."
Waves for Change was launched by Tim Conibear, who visited South Africa after graduating from university in the United Kingdom.
Between fifty and eighty children are brought to the beaches around False Bay for weekly sessions. First, they talk about their experiences as part of some sort of relaxed group therapy session – then they dress in combination and hit the waves.
It is important to separate them from their environment so that they can stay out of gangs and the areas affected by crime are important, says Keenan Adonis, coach of this charity.
"Things like violence fascinate them. Because it happens at their neighbor next door, it happens in the next street. They stand near the crime scene. They want to see what happens. They want to know, "Is my friend lying there?", He said.
Adonis says that children like Chloe, who stick to the program, are transformed.
"It helps me because we have good manners here, no swear, no fight and they care about us here," Chloe said.
