Palace assistants are said to have once told Meghan Markle never to lead her sister-in-law, Kate Middleton, into “unnecessary gossip.”
The claim was recently made by Omid Scobie, royal editor for Harper’s Bazaar and co-author of the bombshell book “Finding Freedom”. Many insiders came to see Scobie and his co-author Carolyn Durand and detailed what drove the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to leave as senior members of the British Royal Family.
Scobie alleged to the outlet that the couple had long felt that other members of the royal family, like Middleton and her husband, Prince William, received much more support from palace aides against the British tabloids than they did. However, their exasperation “came to a head in January 2020”.
At the time, Scobie claimed Kensington Palace urgently asked Markle’s husband Prince Harry to co-sign a statement against an “offensive” newspaper article alleging that William, 39, “constantly intimidated” the Sussexes before their decision to step down as members of the Royal Family.
MEGHAN MARKLE’S TOUCH LETTER TO UK SCHOOL ON INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY REVEALED
“Well if we just throw a statement out there now then maybe KP can finally set the record straight about me. [not making Kate cry], “Markle, 39, reportedly emailed a palace aide.
However, a source claimed his request, like many others, was ignored.
“The Duchess of Cambridge, [Meghan] has been said, should never be drawn into empty gossip, ”Scobie wrote.
During a two-hour chat with Oprah Winfrey that aired on Sunday, Markle cleared up the rumor she made Middleton cry ahead of the former American actress’ 2018 royal wedding to Harry, 36.
PRINCE CHARLES DEFENDED BY THE LEADER OF THE CHORUS OF THE GOSPEL AFTER ALLEGATIONS OF ROYAL RACISM
Markle told Winfrey, 67, that “the opposite has happened”.
“It was a turning point,” admitted Markle.
Markle alleged that the report that she and the Duchess of Cambridge had a long-standing feud stemming from Middleton crying at the wedding “just didn’t happen”. Instead, Markle explained that days before the wedding, Middleton was bowled over by the bridesmaid dress her daughter Princess Charlotte was supposed to wear.
“It made me cry and it really hurt me,” said Markle. “And I thought in the context of everything that was going on around the time leading up to the marriage, it didn’t make sense not to do what everyone else was doing, which was trying to support me.
PRINCE WILLIAM’S RESPONSE TO MEGHAN MARKLE, PRINCE HARRY’S ALLEGATIONS OF RACISM IS ‘UNUSUAL’: ROYAL EXPERT
However, Markle noted that the alleged feud that led to such media fodder ended almost as quickly as it started thanks to Middleton’s apology.
“It was a really tough week of marriage,” said Markle. “And she was upset about something, but she owned it, and she apologized. And she brought me flowers and a note, apologizing. And she did what I would do if I did. knew I hurt someone, didn’t I, for just taking responsibility for it. “
According to Scobie, Markle had long urged palace assistants to set the record straight as the rumor was escalated by the British press. He was constantly told that would not be possible.
“What was hard to get over was being blamed for something that not only didn’t I do, but happened to me,” Markle later told Winfrey. “Everyone in the institution knew that was not true…. I’m not sharing this piece about Kate in any way to disparage her. I think it’s really important that people understand the truth.… He’s a good person. And I think a lot of what I’ve seen play out is this idea of polarity, where if you love me you don’t have to hate her. And if you love him, you don’t have to hate me. “

“They seemed to really want a tale of a hero and a villain,” Markle added.
Scobie noted that palace assistants were more helpful to other members of the royal family when it came to addressing the press. He pointed out that officials even issued a statement denying that Middleton had used Botox in July 2019.
“But Harry and Meghan felt they did not have access to this same privilege,” he wrote.
Instead, the negative stories only intensify as Markle struggles to navigate his role as a senior member of the British Royal Family. During this time, Middleton was often praised and worshiped as the future queen consort.

After Harry and Markle’s wedding in May 2018 at Windsor Castle, the royal family appeared to welcome the Duchess of Sussex, a former glamorous TV star. The couple were seen as offering a new, youthful face to the monarchy of an increasingly multicultural nation.
It didn’t take long for the fairy tale to unfold.
The couple stepped down from royal duties last year and eventually settled in California, claiming they wanted to escape racist coverage and unwanted intrusions into their privacy by the British media.
