Meghan Markle’s father Thomas is said to have explained what led him to leak a private letter from his daughter to the press.
In 2019, Thomas, 76, authorized the publication of a private letter from his daughter by the Mail on Sunday newspaper and the MailOnline website after tensions between him and his daughter mounted.
Meghan, 39, is now suing publisher Associated Newspapers for breach of privacy and copyright over the five articles that included parts of the handwritten letter.
Today, nearly two years after the correspondence was published, Thomas explained exactly why he felt the need to make the letter public.

The former television lighting director told the court he felt “vilified” by an article published by People magazine, according to testimony obtained by E! New.
“When I read the article ‘The Truth About Meghan’ in People magazine, I was shocked at what it said about me,” the statement said. “It was a total lie. It distorted the tone and the content of the letter Meg had written to me in August 2018 quickly decided that I wanted to correct this false statement.”

On February 6, 2019, People published an article titled “The Truth About Meghan Markle’s Father – and the Letter She Wrote to Him After the Wedding”, in which a “longtime friend” addressed the letter, claiming that she was “heartbroken” to hear about fear of her father’s health and wrote to him to tell him that she loves him and wanted to “fix” their relationship.
Additionally, Thomas reportedly said he believed his daughter had “allowed” five of her friends to speak with People about the relationship he shared with her, as well as the letter itself.
The article suggested Meghan “loved me and wanted to mend our relationship,” Thomas said. However, he felt that the letter “was a criticism”.

“It actually meant the end of our relationship, not a reconciliation,” the Duchess’s father explained.
In the People magazine article, the friend alleges that Thomas offered a photoshoot with his daughter in her response to her letter, which Meghan felt contradicted what she told him in her initial letter, when told her dad she didn’t. “want to communicate through the media.”

Thomas, however, said he instead offered a ‘harmonious’ photo of himself with Meghan, believing it would ‘set the press back’.
Further, Thomas refuted the friend’s claim that he “never” contacted his daughter after the ordeal. Thomas allegedly claimed in court that he “couldn’t find a way to get her to talk to me.”
Allowing the Daily Mail to “quote and reproduce parts of the letter” was the only way to tell his side of the story.

“The text of the letter proves that what was said in People magazine about the letter was false,” Thomas said. “It ‘dissolves’ what was said about me in this article. Readers had to see the letter for themselves – then they would know they were getting the truth.”
He also said it was his choice to only publish parts of the letter.
“I didn’t want the entire letter to be published,” he explained. “The reason was that I thought the letter as a whole made Meg look terrible. I don’t want to attack or hurt her.”

Meghan’s lawyers have reportedly denied that the Duchess of Sussex was aware of the People article before it was published.
However, in publicly available documents in Britain, Meghan’s legal team insists the letter was an example of ‘royal begging [Thomas] stop talking to the press. “
