Kathy Griffin announced in a social media post early Monday morning that she was suffering from lung cancer and was going to undergo surgery to have “half of [her] Left lung removed “immediately. While the news sparked a surge of support from celebrities, including fellow comedian Sarah Silverman and actress Mia Farrow, not everyone had kind words for the controversial comedian.
On Meghan McCain’s last Monday as co-host of “The View,” she responded to news of Griffin’s diagnosis by stating at one point: “I don’t like him, I will never like him for all the jokes she makes about clay [Aiken]. McCain refers to jokes Griffin made over a decade ago about “American Idol” singer Clay Aiken being gay before his 2008 release.
In Griffin’s Instagram post originally announcing his diagnosis, the comedian wrote, “I have to tell you something. I have cancer.” Griffin’s sister notably had cancer, and Griffin shaved her head in 2017 to show solidarity with her while undergoing chemotherapy. Her brother Gary died of cancer in 2014.
Griffin continues, “Yes, I have lung cancer even though I have never smoked! Doctors are very optimistic because it is stage one and confined to my left lung.” After her operation, she writes that she hopes she doesn’t need “chemo or radiation therapy” and should “be up and running as usual in a month or less.”
McCain also felt that the revelation of Griffin’s cancer diagnosis was a good time for her to apologize for the hurtful jokes of the past. In particular, in reference to Griffin’s posting of a 2017 social media photo of her holding what looks like the bloody, decapitated head of Donald Trump, McCain appeared to compare Griffin to a terrorist organization.
“And I don’t like it because I don’t like to see anyone’s head cut off anywhere, because it reminds me of what ISIS is doing to our soldiers,” McCain said. .
At the time, Griffin’s anti-Trump joke caused CNN to end its deal with comedic and passionate bipartisan fury against it, despite its apologies. Griffin had described having suffered routine harassment and death threats from supporters of the former president, and had struggled to find work. The fallout from Griffin’s joke has been compared by some to the music industry Dixie Chicks’ near-blacklisting in the early 2000s for their criticism of George W. Bush and the Iraq War. “The View” co-host Whoopi Goldberg got the conversation back on track in Monday’s episode, turning away from Griffin’s past actions and focusing on his diagnosis.
“For me, I think that was a really bad step. Griffin, who is due to speak about his diagnosis in an interview with Juju Chang on ABC News’ Nightline on Monday night, has yet to respond to McCain’s explosive comments. As for McCain, it’s unclear what she’s planning on following her stint on “The View,” but it doesn’t look like she’s planning to forgive Griffin anytime soon.
