WALKER, MI – Meijer has joined a growing number of major US retailers who are asking customers not to openly carry firearms in their stores.

The Midwestern retailer announced its request on Monday, Sept. 9, on Twitter, noting that open firearms could put employees and customers at risk.

"The safety of our customers and our team members is our top priority. We respectfully ask our customers not to open their firearms at Meijer, " the company said in the Tweet. "We made this decision because open carry can create an environment in which our customers and team members do not feel safe."

The changes that Meijer brings to the sale of ammunition and firearms are not immediately clear.

The announcement comes less than a week after Walmart asked customers not to openly carry guns in their stores. The retail giant has announced that it will also stop selling ammunition for handguns and rifles.

Walmart's policy was changed after a 21-year-old man opened fire at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas. The attack killed 22 people.

Other major retailers who have been asking customers in recent weeks not to bring firearms into stores or not to carry them openly include Kroger, Walgreens and CVS, reports The Hill.

Meijer has more than 200 stores in the Midwest. In addition to Michigan, there are stores in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and Wisconsin.
