During their 20-minute visit on Thursday afternoon, the first couple laid flags in section 34 of the cemetery, placing flags on the gravestones of Frank Buckles, a veteran of the First World War, among others, according to the press pool of the White House.
The visit comes before the weekend of Memorial Day, which the president will spend in Japan.
The first couple will leave for Japan on Friday and will not be on American soil Monday for traditional ceremonies in the honor of the military. White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said the president would also hold a Memorial Day ceremony in Japan, but also wanted to travel to Arlington.
The cemetery is the final resting place for more than 400,000 men and women. Each year, each day of commemoration, a flag is placed on each tombstone.
"They went to hell so that the United States could experience the benefits of peace, they died so that freedom could live," Trump said at the time.
