Melania Trump celebrates arrival of White House Christmas tree

First Lady Melania Trump on Monday celebrated the arrival of the annual White House Christmas tree – without President Trump or their son, Barron Trump, who have attended the event in recent years.

The First Lady emerged from the North Portico of the White House around noon to accept the 18½-foot Fraser Fir from a forest farm in West Virginia.

“Merry Christmas,” she told reporters, ignoring a shouted question about how the president is doing.

Two large Clydesdale horses hauled the tree up the north aisle of the White House while a military band played “O Tannenbaum” and “Hark the Herald Angels Sing”.

Forest farm owners Dan and Anne Taylor attended the event.

The president is expected to participate in another holiday tradition this week: the turkey’s light forgiveness before Thanksgiving.
