Running back Melvin Gordon returned to the Chargers on Thursday and will be training with the team for the first time since the start of his career earlier this year.
Head coach Anthony Lynn said at a press conference that the team would determine where Gordon would be in the next few days and develop a plan to prepare him to play after the long layoff. He did not rule out the possibility that Gordon will play against the Dolphins this weekend, but added that it was not the most likely path for the team.
Once Gordon is considered ready to go, Lynn said that "we will use it as we have used it before," which means reinstalling it as Back # 1.
"No doubt, no doubt. He is our entry. He was our starter for a reason, "Lynn said.
Lynn added that Austin Ekeler and Justin Jackson will still have offensive roles and that they have been successful enough so that the team does not feel the need to push Gordon into the ### ## # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # 39, but his general comments suggest a return to the status quo than sooner or later.
