Syracuse, NY – The AAA predicts that 37.6 million travelers will hit the road this holiday weekend, a 3.5% increase over last year and the Memorial Day weekend record.

According to AAA, nearly 43 million Americans will travel this weekend, the unofficial start to the summer vacation season. The vast majority will drive, he said.

Here are more figures from AAA:

  • An estimated 3.25 million people will fly this weekend, an increase of 4.8% over last year and only one second in 2005.
  • About 1.9 million people will travel by train, bus or cruise ship, an increase of 3.8% over 2018.
  • In New York, 2.65 million people will travel this weekend, an increase of 3.5% over 2018.
  • A record 2.39 million in New York will travel by car and nearly 183,000 by plane. Some 73,000 people will travel by other means.

The increase in travel will occur despite the average increase in the national price of gasoline, which is around $ 3 a gallon.

"When gas prices are expensive, travelers can shorten the distance traveled, eat less, or look for free activities," said Carol DiOrio, vice president of travel at AAA Western and Central New York. "But overall, the prices are very similar to last year's prices, and at that point, they do not let that prevent them from making summer trips."
