Memorial fund created for deceased firefighter during Ironman

MADISON (WKOW) – Local 311 of Madison Fire Services and Firefighters held a news conference today to inform the community of the death of Appliance Engineer Todd Mahoney.

Madison Fire Chief Steven Davis and Mahlon Mitchell, President of Local 311, spoke.

A commemorative fund has been created to support the Mahoney family. Make a donation to the ICI Fund.

Mahoney was rescued from the water at 8:52 am on Sunday and rescue attempts continued as he was being transported to St. Mary's Hospital of SSM Health where he was in critical condition.

Another swimmer, Michael McCulloch of Cottage Grove, died Sunday morning after being removed from the lake.

Mahoney died Tuesday at the hospital.

He was a veteran of the Madison Fire Department, 9 years old. He most recently held the position of Equipment Engineer at Station 1 in downtown Madison and occasional assistance from the Commander of the Command Car.

Previously, he served at Fire Station 9 on Midvale Boulevard and was a paramedic at Fire Station 8 on Lien Road. He began his firefighting career in 2010.

He is survived by his wife and three young sons.

The Dane County Medical Examiner's Office is investigating the cause of Mahoney's death.
