Memphis wide receiver Calvin Austin III fired a quick one over Mississippi State and the team of officials.
Austin returned a 94-yard punt for a touchdown to extend Memphis ‘fourth-quarter lead to 11 points in the Tigers’ insane 31-29 win over the Bulldogs on Saturday.
Austin’s comeback came after players in Mississippi State thought they shot the ball inside Memphis 10. Just watch how it all turned out. We will explain to you after the video.
The Mississippi State players around the ball thought the game was just going to end and the officials were going to blow up the game. And that’s what was going to happen. You can see the official on the left side of the screen about to end the play.
But he begins to signal that the game is over after Austin retrieves the ball. The returning team has a free chance to return the ball without penalty once the ball has been touched by the kicking team. It’s kind of a free pass. After the kicking team touches the ball and before play is over by the officials, the returning team may attempt to advance the ball.
Most players don’t try to do this. But Austin did, and his conscience was wrongly rewarded with a touchdown because of two mistakes made by the team of officials.
Two players with the same number on the field
You’ll notice Austin wears the number 4. He wasn’t the only Memphis player to wear the number 4 on the court for this play. Defensive lineman Maurice White also wears number 4 and was on the line for the game. If you watch the video closely at the start, you’ll see White near the long snapper. It is illegal, you cannot have two players with the same number on the field at the same time.
Had authorities detected the double number situation, the return would have been canceled and Memphis would have been penalized. The penalty is five yards for illegal participation and play would have been redone.
The game should also have been destroyed when the official started to signal it was over right after Austin got the ball back. The SEC acknowledged in a statement on Saturday night that the crew missed the illegal participation penalty while saying the game should have been destroyed for an unintentional signal from the official and Austin’s return should not have been to count.
Crazy endgame
Mississippi State scored less than three minutes after Austin returned to narrow Memphis’ lead to 28-23. The Bulldogs then attempted a back kick and picked it up to keep the ball. But the game was reviewed and officials discovered an illegal block on the game. MSU had to retry the in-game kick and Memphis recovered.
The Tigers scored a basket to reduce the lead to eight, but Mississippi State scored 30 seconds later with 1:32 remaining to reduce the lead to two. But the Bulldogs’ two-point conversion fell through and Memphis picked up another in-game kick to close a game many MSU fans believe they shouldn’t have won.
