Jonathan Patterson Galligan, 39, and Christian Daniel Hurlburt, 41, are both charged with murder and complicity in murder after the deaths of Christin Bunner and Melissa Rhymer, according to a press release from the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office.
Bunner's family reported his disappearance in December 2018, according to the Sheriff's Office statement, and told investigators that Galligan was his current boyfriend.
Sheriff's MPs reacted to reports of unrest in a towing company on Wednesday night, the statement said. Upon their arrival, they met Hurlburt, who was holding hands behind his back.
After initially refusing MPs' orders to show his hands, Hurlburt discovered a gun and shot himself in the head, the sheriff's office statement said. He immediately received medical assistance at the scene and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Investigation in progress
The next afternoon, Hurlburt asked the investigators to visit him at the hospital and told them that he was present when Galligan killed Bunner in December. He also admitted helping Galligan bury the body behind a house on the next street, Williams Street, according to the sheriff's office.
Investigators located Galligan Friday morning, while another team searched the premises of Williams Street. Galligan immediately asked for a lawyer and there was not enough evidence to hold him back at that time, the authorities said in a statement.
Back at the hospital, Hurlburt then announced that a second woman had been killed and buried at home, but he did not know his name, the sheriff's office said. Hurlburt said that he had killed her in January and he and Galligan buried him near Bunner's grave.
He provided enough information so that authorities could then locate both bodies, the statement said. The coroner identified the second victim as being Rhymer. She was not on the list of missing persons.
Following a press conference held Friday by Sheriff of Spartanburg County, Chuck Wright, authorities received advice from a convenience store owner, who had claimed to have seen Galligan. He was arrested without incident Saturday afternoon, according to the statement. Hurlburt was also charged after leaving the hospital.
Authorities were unable to determine the motive for one or the other killing, the sheriff's office said, and the investigation is still ongoing.
