Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 2020: better management, smarter

Mercedes-AMG is updating the GLC 63 model range for 2020, even if it really needed it. The performance variants of this compact crossover already exceed their classic counterparts in terms of look, even the strangely chunky GLC "Coupé".

However, as the manufacturer did not just rest on its laurels, it decided to provide a brief but comprehensive list of upgrades.

Production remains the same for the 2020 model year, but AMG has left no one sane wanting. The 63-liter V8 2.0-liter V8 still delivers a respectable 469 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque, while the S-Series delivers enviable performance ranging from 503 hp to 516 lb-ft. AMG fans may find all this power more useful because the next batch is said to receive an electronically controlled locking differential in standard equipment. AMG wanted to minimize slippage on the rear inner tire cornering and seems to have succeeded, as the GLC 63 S remains the fastest crossover to tackle the Nürburgring's north loop.

The flat-bottomed galvanized steering wheel is also new. On the S model, the unit is trimmed with black Nappa leather microfiber / DINAMICA – although you can customize it to incorporate more of what you love, even if you like high-gloss carbon fiber. The S models are also fitted with AMG's "Drive Unit", which allows drivers to customize the driving modes via the steering wheel. These include Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport Plus, Individual and Race (the last being only S).

The manufacturer has also updated its electronic stability program to better complement these driving modes: adaptation of the engine / transmission response, torque distribution for the 4Matic AWD system, steering inputs and suspension settings for each.

The Mercedes MBUX makes its debut on the infotainment system display and can be used either by standard means or by the touch controls of the sound-colored steering wheel. However, you can simply talk to her if your fingers are otherwise busy. The system is also intelligent enough to detect whether it is a driver or a passenger looking for it, and performs predictive reasoning to give everyone what they think they need.

Everything else is at the service of the aesthetics of the vehicle. The headlights and taillights are thinner than in the past and the AMG GLC 63 adopts a double trapezoidal design. There is also a new exterior paint option, but its gray is rather predictable. The new Mercedes trim (with contrasting yellow stitching) is much more exciting, although it may be a bit too bold for some tastes.

The only drawback we can see is that the manufacturer still insists on offering the more spacious SUG AMG GLC 63 without the superior engine. If you want the S you to have buy the GLC 63 Coupe.

Both are expected to start arriving at US dealers by the end of this year.
