The GLE SUV ditched one of its more unique options just because no one bought it and that’s a shame. This morning, MotorTrend announced to the automotive world that in the future no Mercedes GLE will come with the superb E-ABC (E-Active Body Control) system which allows the SUV to bounce back thanks to its hydraulic suspension.
The E-ABC system is more than just a party trick and works to keep equipped vehicles flat on turns and to distribute the weight of passengers and cargo to prevent the vehicle from sagging. One of the unique advantages of this system is the free driving assistance mode which allows you to bounce your Mercedes-Benz SUV on snow or sand. If you’re stuck in any of these difficult situations, the rebound can have a profound effect on the traction to help you lift off.
To activate the free driving assist mode, you must be stationary or at very low speed for safety reasons. However, Mercedes-Benz does not limit where you can use this feature, which allows you to put on impressive displays in parking lots. Mercedes-Benz appears to have looked into using its free E-ABC driver assistance mode for entertainment, as they even made a music video using it as a backup dancer.
Mercedes-Benz told MotorTrend that E-ABC was ditched from the GLE SUV due to a low capture rate. This system is still offered on the larger GLS-580 as an option and standard on the GLS 600 Maybach. So if you are looking for a dancing SUV, all you have to do is spend some extra cash and Mercedes-Benz will be happy to sell you one.
The unique E-ABC suspension system is also offered on premium Mercedes-Benz sedans, although the bounce-free drive assist mode is not offered. This is simply because Mercedes-Benz developed the rebounding suspension for off-roading and not showing off. So it looks like we’re just a flash ECU way to bounce S-classes.
