Mercedes-Benz will unveil the special editions of the SLC and SL roadsters at the 2019 Geneva Auto Show. The compact SLC roadster will receive both a "SLC 300 Final Edition" and an "AMG SLC 43 Final Edition". The larger roadster will receive the "Grand Edition" versions of the SL 450 and SL 550. Differences between these editions and the standard version The SLC and SL models will be cosmetic, with aesthetic modifications, high-end details and special badges.
The AMG SLC 43 Final Edition will be presented in an exclusive 'Sun Yellow' model, tribute to the original 1996 SLK roadster. The SLC 300 Final Edition will be offered in 'Selenite Gray' and will feature wheels, black glossy door handles and mirrors.
The roadsters of the SL Grand Edition will be offered in "graphite gray" with "applications in shiny chrome and matte silver". They will be equipped with a lowered sport suspension, shiny AMG black rims and an assortment of leather finishes from Mercedes 'Designo' workshop.
Mercedes did not mention the prices for the SLC and SL editions. They will arrive at US dealers in 2020. No, Mercedes will not launch a manual gearbox "for the good old days".
The luxury of these roadsters should inject interest for two lines of model a little tired. The SLC has not been completely overhauled since the launch of the third-generation SLK in 2011. The sixth generation of SL has been in existence since the 2013 model year. US sales of SLC and SL have 30.8% and 27.7% in 2018. Together, both models accounted for only 1.3% of Mercedes sales in the United States last year.
What Mercedes will eventually do with the SLC is interesting and still remains unknown. It is difficult to be more threatening than the "last edition". Mercedes could create a new entry-level class A roadster. They could go in a totally different direction with a cheaper performance car. Let's all pray something weird, a little thing like convertible SUV.
