The 2019 Frankfurt Auto Show kicked off this week and focuses primarily on electromobility and future modes of transportation. Predictably, German automakers are at the forefront of these changes, and Mercedes-Benz was no exception. The Stuttgart-based car manufacturer has introduced the Mercedes EQS Vision to the world, a modern and futuristic interpretation of the future S-Class limo. But Mercedes says it will not replace the S-Class immediately, but will be sold to others for a few years.
The production variant of the Mercedes Vision EQS will be at the top of the EQ sub-brand created by Mercedes to consolidate its electric models. More importantly, it is the first use of a new EV platform that the brand will deploy soon for production models.
The Mercedes EQS Vision Car is equipped with two electric motors that together provide an output of more than 350 kW (476 hp) and a torque of 760 Newton meters. As each electric motor is placed on the front and rear axles, the Mercedes Vision EQS has four-wheel drive and good traction. For the sprint from 0 to 100 km / h, Mercedes promises a time of less than 4.5 seconds. The maximum speed must be electronically limited to more than 200 km / h.
Even more important than the performance of an electric car are the cornerstones of the battery. The range should be, according to WLTP, up to 700 kilometers. The lithium-ion battery supplied by Accumotive, a subsidiary of Daimler, has a capacity greater than 100 kWh and should be able to charge up to 350 kW, theoretically charging times ranging from 20 minutes to 80%.
For the body of the Mercedes Vision EQS, Daimler also opted for a mix of materials made of steel, aluminum, carbon and durable materials. A circumferential light strip with integrated holographic headlight modules, a digital grille with a light matrix of 188 individual LEDs and a 229 star Mercedes star at the rear indicate that the lighting technology of Mercedes will be an even more important element of differentiation in the future.
As part of Mercedes 'plan to unveil 130 electrified cars by 2030, Mercedes EQS' flagship product will be the largest and most expensive of the 10 100% electric models to come by 2025.
BMW's Munich-based engineers are already at the heart of the new Series 7 project, which will debut by 2023 and will also include a series of electrified vehicles, ranging from plug-in hybrids to the full model of the series. 7 (more soon).
