Messenger’s new “ disappear mode ” makes chats self-destructive with just a swipe

[ad_1]

It wasn’t until last week that Facebook introduced ephemeral messages in WhatsApp that disappear in seven days. Now the company is taking it a step further by introducing ‘Vanish Mode’ for Messenger and Instagram, which will automatically delete text messages and media as soon as they are viewed and you exit the chat.

If this sounds familiar to you, it’s probably because it’s another feature Facebook is borrowing from Snapchat, which has offered similar functionality for years.

To activate the feature, all you need to do is swipe your finger up in a thread. You will then see a small loading circle and your interface will turn dark to indicate that the feature has been enabled. To exit fade out mode, just swipe up again.

The idea seems to be to allow users to get in and out of disappear mode at will when they want to share something private without worrying about these messages being saved forever.

You’ll also be notified if someone takes a screenshot while you’re in disappearance mode. Of course, there’s no point if someone decides to take a photo with a camera instead.

If you want a little more privacy in Messenger without your messages automatically being deleted, you can always try the Secret Chat feature which adds end-to-end encryption to your chats. Here are the messages can be set to automatic deletion, but this is not the default behavior.

Vanish mode is “slowly rolling out” on Messenger and Instagram – the former first – from the United States.
