METEOR SPOTTED ACROSS THE SOUTHEAST: Fire in the sky: Meteor spotted by hundreds across the southeast

CHARLOTTE, N.C. Hundreds of people across the southeast reported seeing a radiant light in the sky early Thursday morning.

Just before 7 am, dozens of people in the Charlotte area called the WSOC and alerted us to the social networks that they too had seen what appeared to be a meteor illuminating the sky.

Ashley Metcalf of Barnardsville, North Carolina, grabbed the object in front of the camera and sent the video to Channel 9's sister station, WLOS.

According to the American Meteorological Society, the fireball would have been observed in Florida, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee and Kentucky.

This is the second large meteor observed on the east coast this week, with a reported Sunday in Florida.

According to Popular Science, about 60 tons of space dust – from meteors, comets, etc. – fall on Earth every day, but they are usually incredibly small.
