Metro 2033 was a diamond in the rough when it was released in 2010. Set in the metro beneath post-apocalyptic Moscow, it was atmospheric, dark, and buggy. Now it’s free to keep, if you pick it up before 10am PT / 6pm GMT on March 15th.
The developers at 4A Games made it available as part of the 10th anniversary of the series, along with significant discounts on the rest of the series. Last year Metro Exodus, the third game in the series, was 66% off to £ 11.89.
Note that what is offered for free here is the original 2010 version of the game, which, although patched, is not as polished as the Metro 2033 Redux version released in 2014. This version added functionality to the sequel to the game, Metro Last Light, including an AI improvement. Metro 2033 Redux was also offered for free through the Epic Games Store in December, while right now it and Last Light Redux will set you back £ 3 each.
£ 3 isn’t a lot of money for a better version of the game, but hey, free is still free. If you need more information on the pros and cons of the original, Alec’s feedback is a fair summary:
I love Metro 2033, but I wish I had liked it. I can’t help but want this to be a curious cause of delay, like with Stalker. This is one of the very few post-Half-Life 2 games that really understands and acts on why people have dug this so much, and despite the maddening checkpoint, it’s just quite obtuse and delicate enough. so that it looks like a PC game first and foremost.
