Mets could be the only team pushing for Kris Bryant, but all of Bryant, Báez and Rizzo could miss deadline

We know the Chicago Cubs plan to sell this month, and we know some of their pitchers will be worth enough in the market to move. But what we don’t know is whether the Cubs will actually trade one of their three longtime stars, each an outgoing free agent after this year: Kris Bryant, Javy Báez and Anthony Rizzo.

Jesse Rogers was on Waddle and Silvy, reporting what he heard this week in Colorado, and it was very specific and very interesting. Granted, you take predictions with a grain of salt – and he offered his own caveat – but he certainly didn’t just say what everyone was thinking.

Rogers say the last one he hears? These great three-position players? They are not subject to exchange.

“This is based on the last few days of being here and talking to people in the game,” Rogers said on ESPN 1000. “It won’t be that easy to get what Jed Hoyer wants back. [for] position players. My new prediction is this: Báez, Rizzo and Bryant are on this team on August 1. “

Pretty straightforward, and Rogers’ predictions on that front are based on nothing. I’ve learned to listen to when Rogers drops this stuff on the radio and incorporate it into our general thinking.

It all fits the logic, though, as the Cubs have potential end-of-season value in these three guys even though they’re not competitive and even though the players are traded. First, there’s the qualifying offer which can turn into a draft pick after the second round (not a huge comeback, but not nothing). Second, there’s the ability to re-sign these guys before they hit the open market (with the weight of a qualifying offer on their backs). Again, not necessarily a significant value, but not nothing. Add them together and compare them to what are usually generally sweet midseason offers for positional players, and it’s not like Rogers’ prediction is that crazy.

Now. Kris Bryant would appear to have the highest commercial value of the three, however, and also appear to be the least likely of the three to sign again after the season. So you have to at least warn Bryant, right?

And Rogers does, calling the New York Mets the only caveat on Bryant.

“This is the team that I keep hearing about. If the Mets give Jed what he’s looking for, he’ll trade [Bryant] the. But I think he might end [staying in Chicago], get the qualifying offer, turn it down, and the Cubs will take that pick-up draft pick instead of a dreck they’ll grab in a trade.

Rogers rightly points out that mid-season player trades haven’t generated huge returns, and he doesn’t think Jed Hoyer wants to trade Bryant for a soft comeback just to get something, especially early in the season. his presidency. Hoyer would prefer Bryant “to go away on his own,” according to Rogers.

So this is it. Take the information, put it in your back pocket, and keep it in mind as the rumors swirl. Again, this ties in with a lot of what we had previously thought, especially regarding the improbability of Báez and Rizzo being traded, and regarding long-standing Mets-Bryant rumors picking up again.
