The Mets missed a chance to fortify their field on Sunday, when left reliever Brad Hand signed a one-year, $ 10.5 million contract with the Nationals.
Hand had been on the Mets’ radar this offseason and would have helped balance the club’s back-up body, mostly right-handed.
Team president Sandy Alderson previously said the Mets might have claimed $ 10 million in rebate waivers plus a $ 50,000 transaction fee in November, if the new property led by Steve Cohen was in charge at that time.
Hand, who will be 32 in March, has finally become a free agent. He was 2-1 with a 2.05 ERA, 0.773 WHIP and 16 saves last season for Cleveland.
News of Hand’s deal with Washington was confirmed by Post’s Joel Sherman.
The Mets have been without a GM since Jared Porter was sacked last week after it was revealed he sent explicit texts to a reporter while working for the Cubs five years earlier.
Alderson has since assumed general manager responsibilities, a position he previously held with the Mets.
