After ESPN’s Mina Kimes and Jeff Passan reported Monday night that former Mets general manager Jared Porter sexually harassed a former reporter while he was with the Cubs, the Mets fired Porter early Tuesday morning. In a tweet shortly after 8:00 am, owner Steve Cohen announced the termination, writing “There should be no tolerance for this type of behavior.” Mets President Sandy Alderson also issued a statement that “Jared’s actions … have failed to meet the Mets’ standards of professionalism and personal conduct.”
Late Tuesday afternoon, Sandy Alderson held a Zoom press conference to further discuss the layoff and answer questions from reporters.
At the press conference, Alderson detailed the timeline of the previous 24 hours, saying he was briefed on the ESPN story from Porter around 5:30 p.m. Monday. Alderson also explained that he didn’t have a full understanding of the gravity of the situation until he read the ESPN article and saw the accompanying ESPN video.
Alderson said if the Mets had learned of the allegations during the interview with Porter, they would not have hired him.
Alderson also added he is now in charge of baseball operations and has been since he was hired.
Porter’s story won’t end with his dismissal as MLB plans to investigate the explicit text messages Porter sent.
Plus, firing Porter was the easiest part of it all, as the Mets and MLB have to start wondering how to change a culture that is dominated by men and so deeply rooted in the sport.
