PHILADELPHIA – Javier Baez’s departure from Sunday’s game was not a positive development for a Mets team that already has a former All-Star shortstop on the injured list.

But there was at least a measure of optimism from manager Luis Rojas following the Mets’ 3-0 loss to the Phillies that the oppression of Baez’s left hip is not a big deal.

Baez was visibly uncomfortable in the fifth inning on a swing in which he hit a Grounder in the infield. Already, the Mets have Francisco Lindor on IL with a tight right slant.

“That much [the concern] is not as high as when it happened in the game, ”Rojas said. “When I saw [Baez] not out of the box, for me it was worrying. I thought it was an oblique, it felt similar to Lindor’s in Pittsburgh. … Right now it’s a contraction of the left hip, and we’re more optimistic about what it was, which got it out of the game.

Baez will receive treatment on Monday’s day off and will be assessed before the Mets play nationals a day later. Jonathan Villar went from third base to shortstop for the last three innings. The Mets lost another shortstop option Luis Guillorme to IL with hamstring strain earlier in the week.

Jose Martinez started a rehab assignment for Single-A St. Lucie, going 0-for-2 as a right fielder. Martinez, a first baseman and outfielder, has been on the injured list since spring training when he underwent knee surgery for a torn meniscus.

The Mets see Martinez as a right-handed stick who could help in the lineup or off the bench.

“It will be good to have that bat soon, especially against lefties,” Rojas said. “We fought against lefties. We want to improve this. Having that right-handed bat to hit left-handed people well like it has historically done will be good. “

Trevor May called the team out in the eighth inning for a second consecutive dominant performance. The right-hander won the save in the Mets’ only road victory Wednesday in Miami.
