With lefty Brad Hand, considered one of the main targets of the Mets’ survey enclosure, now off the field on a deal with rival nationals in the division, the Mets “focus” on left-hander Aaron Wolf, Reports Anthony DiComo of MLB.com (via Twitter). The 33-year-old has a strong record, albeit less than Hand’s, but should therefore be offered at a more affordable price.
Wolf spent the 2020 season with the Rays, throwing at 2.52 ERA and 3.62 SIERA with a 22.9% take-out rate and 4.2% walk rate that ranked among the best in the league. . It marked an (obviously) exceptional rebound effort for the southpaw, who missed most of the 2019 season with the Padres due to forearm strain.
Prior to the 2019-20 seasons, Loup had spent the vast majority of his career with the Blue Jays enjoying a fair bit of success, but battling some of the ups and downs often associated with the always volatile world of the reserve throw. Wolf has been picked multiple times over the years with the Jays, including multiple times during a 2016 season that ended with an ERA just north of five. However, in parts of seven seasons with the Jays, Loup finished with a 3.47 ERA, an average take-out rate of 21.8% and a solid walk rate of 7.2%.
As you would expect with any left handed reliever, Loup has some degree of field division. During his nine-year MLB career, he kept left-handed hitters at a .232 / .301 / .319 line, while right-handed hitters were more successful at .264 / .333 / .424. That said, Wolf was pretty good against righties and lefties in 2020 – albeit in an obviously limited working sample.
With Justin wilson Coming into the free market after securing a two-year deal in Queens, the Mets lack a left-wing reliever with some sort of Major League record. Request for waiver Stephen tarpley and long-time farmer Daniel Zamora are both on the 40-player roster and both have big league experience, though neither have had much success in 2020. Former Met Jerry Blevins is also back with the club as part of an unlisted deal with an invitation to spring training, so he can also factor in the look depending on how things are going at camp.
