Over the weekend, Villar was reportedly in talks with the Reds about a contract, but it looks like New York has made a better offer to the former speedster Astros, Brewers, Orioles, Marlins and Blue Jays. Bobby Nightengale from Cincinnati Enquirer tweets that Cincinnati’s efforts were likely focused on a minor league deal.

The Mets also have a mix of full infield and crowded outfield, but the floating-footed Villar will likely give them a super-utility option that can bounce around the diamond’s multiple spots. While Villar has spent most of his career on shortstop and second, he also recorded the action at third base, center field and left. The Marlins originally planned to use him as the center’s main defender last year when they acquired him from the Orioles, but the team’s first outbreak of Covid-19 threw the roster into a state of chaos and sent Villar back into the infield.

The 2020 season has been lousy for Villar, who was disappointed in Miami before collapsing completely during a 22-game stint with Toronto. Villar’s overall punchline last season registered a disastrous .232 / .301 / .292, but his record before that performance was generally strong.

From 2015-19, Villar hit a .269 / .336 / .423 combined with 70 homers and 167 interceptions in 2,472 home plate appearances. Villar was arguably the best player on a bad list for the Orioles in 2019 when he hit .274 / .339 / .453 with 24 homers and 40 stolen bases.

There’s clear power and speed with the Villar hitting the switch, and while it doesn’t play a position particularly well, its ability to take a variety of spots on the Diamond only serves to deepen a further. Mets much improved. Roster in 2021. He’s also been a productive regular recently enough that one can imagine him playing a daily role and holding the fort skillfully in the event of an injury to the second baseman. Jeff McNeil, short stop Francisco Lindor or third baseman Jd davis. Villar joins Albert Almora Jr. and Jose martinez on an increasingly veteran Mets bench.
