Mets won’t fill ousted GM Jared Porter position

Sandy Alderson’s plan when he returned to the Mets was to oversee the entire organization, with a president of baseball operations and a general manager under him.

Then he became Alderson and just a general manager.

On Tuesday, it became entirely the Sandy Alderson show.

Following the dismissal of chief executive Jared Porter – he was fired after ESPN reported sending obscene texts to a reporter in 2016 – Alderson has indicated he has no plans to fill the position in the immediate. That will leave Alderson at the head of the front office, with sort of a GM per committee.

The main players are Assistant General Manager Zack Scott, Director of Strategy John Ricco, VP of Amateur and International Scouting Tommy Tanous, Head of Professional Scouting Bryn Alderson and Senior Director of Baseball Operations Ian Levin. Additionally, Ben Zauzmer was recently hired by the Dodgers to oversee research and development. Joe Lefkowitz, research and development manager, also participates in the daily Zoom meetings.

Scott, a former Red Sox executive, was a finalist at Porter for the GM position. Its strength lies in analysis.

“One of the things that we’re going to miss is kind of the same breadth of contact and information that we were able to get through Jared,” Alderson said. “Jared has a lot of contact in the game – not just at the GM level, but at the Deputy GM level and below. It’s a rich source of information and may lead to smaller offers that complement our list. This is an area that we will have to address. “

Alderson’s involvement at this point came in the larger transactions, evidenced by the trade that brought Francisco Lindor and Carlos Carrasco to Cleveland.

“My focus on baseball will increase a little bit and we’ll see how things go,” Alderson said. “One of the things I was happy about was the way the front office team was developing as a group, led by Jared.

“Jared was energetic, he was knowledgeable and I was really happy with the direction it was going. It is a secondary consequence in this situation, but I will be a little more involved, but I have great confidence in our group and I am sure that he can intervene.
