Representatives of the Venezuelan Society of Infectious Diseases warned against the possibility that the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) could become an epidemic in the country. They say this is due to lack of treatments and disease surveillance mechanisms.
"There is a risk that HIV will become a major epidemic due to the lack of mechanisms to monitor it," said Mario Comegna, representative of the organization.
For her part, Maria Lopez, president of the society, said that 70% of children who have the virus are not treated.
"There are 70% children with the virus who are not cared for," he said during a march of the Lgbti community on Sunday.
Citizen Action Against AIDS representative Alberto Nieves added that 75% of those affected are men. He asked that the lives of patients with the disease be guaranteed.
"Tomorrow, we will ask for an audience with the new Minister of Health, since the previous one never attended," said Nieves
