Warsaw . Do you want to swim in the Baltic Sea to cool the unusual and hot European summer? It's too hot for that.
This week, Polish authorities banned swimming on more than 50 beaches along the Baltic coast, as high temperatures favored the spread of harmful bacteria in the sea.
39, ocean water exceeded 23 degrees Celsius (73 degrees Fahrenheit) in some areas on Thursday.
Rescuers told holidaymakers on the hot sand beaches, from Swinoujscie to the west to Gdynia to the east, not to enter the sea, where there are thick greenish colonies of cyanobacteria that threaten health.
Regional health authorities have warned that contact with the bacteria can cause allergies and rashes. Drinking contaminated water can also cause serious digestive problems.
In 12 years, the Baltic Sea has not experienced such an intense growth of cyanobacteria. This occurs from the unusually high room temperature of 34 degrees Celsius (93 degrees Fahrenheit) which has increased the temperature of the typically cold Baltic Sea.
