Mexican scientists have developed a treatment using human genes to regenerate the liver and relieve cirrhosis, a disease caused by alcohol consumption and hepatitis C. Juan Armendáriz, researcher at the campus Health Sciences University of Guadalajara (UdeG) explained that they used human gene therapy to inject into people, with the aim of reversing diseases that could not be healed by conventional methods.

Armendáriz, leader of the research He explained that they developed adenoviral vectors (modified viruses that do not generate infections) with a metalloproteinase gene known as MMP8. These enzymes or proteins are naturally produced by the body to break down collagen and participate in processes of healing, tissue regeneration and against the invasion or metastasis of tumor cells. The adenoviral vectors with the MMP8 gene were administered into the muscles and succeeded in stimulating liver regeneration.
