Mexico City. This week, Google has confirmed something that has been talked about since the use of AMOLED screens on phones: using the phone with a "dark" mode (with a black background) saves a bit of life drums. This is due to the fact that the screen technology consumes less energy by displaying a black color than a white color. And it differs from the LCD, where the energy expenditure is the same regardless of the color displayed on the screen.

Several manufacturers allow to put their phones in dark mode to allow this saving (especially with a black background in the configuration menus or in the list of applications), but now, Google puts figures: according to the company, the savings range from 14 to 60% (in the latter case, an empty screen with maximum brightness). In addition, the display of blue on the screen consumes 25% more energy than doing it with the average red or green color. White is what spends more, black is what decreases consumption.

This allows Samsung, LG and Motorola to display notifications when the screen is blocked: as it is dark and at least a portion is lit, the power consumption is very low; Samsung said that for the Galaxy S7, always having the clock visible (in white with little brightness, on the black background) accounted for 1% of the battery per hour.

Last week at the last developer meeting, at which the company announced its support for folding screens, Google confirmed that it was aware that white consumes more energy than the black.
