After the unrest, the Haitian Prime Minister announces his resignation

The Prime Minister of Haiti, Jack Guy Lafontant presented his resignation on Saturday to the position, amid criticism for the treatment of his failed attempt to increase fuel prices that generated a wave of violent riots .

Lafontant declared to the Chamber of Deputies that he had sent his letter of resignation to the President Jovenel Moses .

MPs summoned the Prime Minister to answer questions about violent riots recorded between July 6 and 8 to protest the government's attempt to raise prices hydrocarbons . During the three days of protests about seven people died and dozens of businesses were looted or destroyed.

The session in the chamber was held while in different parts of the capital small groups of people demonstrated in the resignation requests of the head of government. To prevent acts of violence such as those committed last weekend, the police deployed elements and increased its presence in the vicinity of the Chamber of Deputies .

A group of senators yesterday asked the Speaker of this House to call an emergency session to question Lafontant and possibly request his dismissal and the formation of a new cabinet.

Lafontant, a 57-year-old doctor with no experience in public administration, took office in March 2017 after his appointment by President Moses was approved by Parliament.
