Virtual President-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) said Tuesday that he would end the use of hydraulic fracturing or "fracturing" to extract gas and oil , a technique that has barely begun to be used in parts of the north of the country.
At a press conference, AMLO answered a question about possible fracking and said: "We will no longer use this method to extract oil . "
Mexico has a huge potential shale formation in the Burgos basin similar to the Eagle Ford oil field in Texas.
But, although few wells were drilled, the Mexican government recently programmed [1945900] a call for tenders for the opening of some blocks for commercial development by hydraulic fracturing.
AMLO also criticized the contracts for the production of electricity by private entities that displaced the parastatal Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE). He indicated that this trend would be "corrected", but he did not specify if he would seek to cancel the current contracts.
"In the neoliberal government, they deliberately shut down the CFE factories to buy electricity from foreign companies at very high prices," said López Obrador. "All this will be corrected," he said.
