Black Widow's individual film already has a director

After nearly a decade of rumors, the solo film Black Widow begins to take shape with a risky decision to complete the project.

Black Widow is one of the most popular, recurring and long-lived characters in the film world Marvel (MCU). Curiously, none of this seemed to be enough for the studio to give him his own movie. The rumors rang for years and as we began to lose hope, the franchise's top executives finally confirmed the project.

It was confirmed a few months ago that the script would be written by Jac Shaeffer . Now, the study announces that the address will be provided by Cate Shortland [vía] best known for such films as Berlin Syndrome, Lore and Somersault ]. In this way, Black Widow aspires to become the first film in the entire series commissioned by a solo director.

Marvel's early efforts to have a director were in 2011, when Patty Jenkins was hired to Thor: a dark world ( Thor: The Dark World ). The alliance was broken in a few months by creative differences between the two parties. Four years later, Ava DuVernay was sought after Black Panther but the fate was the same. It was until 1945 that Anna Boden became the first director of the entire franchise with Captain Marvel although in his case co-directed with Ryan Fleck .

Beyond gender, Cate Shortland's choice respects an increasingly recurring line in the studio: a director who forged her career in independent filmmaking. It came with James Gunn, Jon Watts and Taika Waititi among others. In this case, his work has been widely accepted in festivals such as Cannes and Locarno to name a few.

Rumors surrounding Black Widow were many, but all point to a prequel. There is talk of a film that explores the Budapest mission mentioned in The Avengers: The Avengers or an adventure related to Captain America and the Winter Soldier ( Captain America: The Winder Soldier ). Of course, we can not exclude a story after Avengers 4 which option would you prefer?

Black Widow has no confirmed first date, but it is said to be part of the Phase Four MCU.
