It is necessary that they brush their teeth properly and that good oral hygiene can "help prevent this type of male sexual impotence".

This is what emerges from a study conducted by researchers at the University of Granada (UGR), belonging to the departments of surgery and their specialties (urology) and stomatology.

According to the UGR in a press release, erectile dysfunction is defined as the inability in humans to have an erection for organic, psychological or a combination of both. Periodontitis is a chronic inflammation of the gum with destruction of the alveolar bone and connective tissue that surrounds and supports the tooth and causes its loss.

In periodontitis, "periodontal bacteria themselves or inflammatory cytokines originate from the gingival focus, they damage the vascular endothelium, when this endothelial dysfunction occurs in the penile vessels, the blood flow in this organ is changed and impotence occurs ".

In this study, with 80 cases and 78 controls in patients treated in the Urology Department of the San Cecilio Clinical Hospital of the Health Technology Park (PTS) of Granada, socio-demographic data were collected, realizing a periodontal examination and analysis to measure testosterone levels, lipid profile, C-reactive protein, glycemia and glycosylated hemoglobin.

Scientists found that 74% of patients with erectile dysfunction had periodontitis, so patients with a more severe disorder had more periodontal injury. Patients with periodontitis were "2.28 times more likely to suffer from erectile dysfunction than periodontal patients". The biochemical variables associated with erectile dysfunction were triglyceride levels, C-reactive protein, and glycosylated hemoglobin.

This study, the first conducted on this topic in the European population, was conducted as part of a doctoral dissertation project whose author was the dentist Amada Martín Amat and its directors, Professors Francisco Mesa (Stomatology) and Miguel Arrabal (Urology). .

The findings were published in the journal Scientific Journal of Clinical Periodontology, considered the most important in periodontal research on the international scene.
