However, the construction of the bridge, which began in December 2009 in the Chinese city of Zhuhai, was marked by delays, cost overruns and political tensions, as well as the death of some 20 workers and more than 600 people injured. nine years of construction.

Considered a major focus of China's plan to strengthen the industry and trade of the Pearl River Delta, with an area of ​​56,500 square kilometers covering 11 cities and more than 68 million 39 inhabitants, the new link funded by the three cities will meet both freight demand and passenger traffic.

The political and economic record of the colossal work continues to be discussed, even at its inauguration, critics estimating that the cost of infrastructure, which exceeded $ 15 billion, entailed an additional expense of about 26%, will be difficult to recover.

The complexity of offshore construction was also responsible for delays and unexpected expenses, according to official sources in Hong Kong.
