The Federal Commission for Economic Competition (Cofece) detected absolute monopoly practices in the Market for the production, distribution and marketing of corn tortillas in the municipality of Palenque, Chiapas, which could have caused price manipulation.

Cofece noted in his opinion on the probable liability that he had knowledge of facts that may arise from the fixation, valuation, preparation or manipulation of the sale price of tortillas, and divide, distribute, assign or enforce market segments.

Following this opinion, Cofece will launch the test in charge of the technical secretariat, in which likely responsible persons will be able to present evidence related to the charges against them. Once these demonstrations have been made, the evidence presented and the corresponding allegations presented, the Cofece may decide according to the law.

"If the conduct of illegal behavior is proven, economic agents could be fined according to the federal law on economic competition that may be applicable," said Cofece.

Absolute monopolistic practices are contracts, agreements or arrangements between competing economic agents, the object or effect of which is the manipulation of prices, the restriction or limitation of supply or demand, the division or segmentation of the markets.
