Scientists from the Autonomous University of Coahuila (UAdeC) and the Saltillo Institute of Technology, belonging to the National Institute of Technology of Mexico (Tecnm), have developed flexible devices capable of capture the heat of the human body, convert it to electricity and use it in various electronic devices, such as in your mobile phone, informed the National Council of Science and Technology (Conacyt).

This prototype is the first step towards charge electronic devices such as cell phones and watchesfrom devices attached to clothing, using sustainable energy such as body heat or even solar energy.

This work is part of the "Conacyt Chairs" project, entitled "Strengthening and Consolidating the PhD in Materials Science and Technology of the Faculty of Chemical Sciences (FCQ) of the Autonomous University of Coahuila (Uadec).

Thanks to the development of specialized materials and the principles of the technological trend of flexible electronics, researchers are developing this prototype which has obtained encouraging results.

In an interview with the news agency Conacyt, the experts detailed the potential of this project, its preliminary results and the contributes to the development of flexible electronics in Mexico, an area of ​​opportunity for the country and a global technological trend.

Sustainable prototype

The specialists developed this project from the point of view of flexible electronics, a new technological trend that aims to develop conventional electronic elements that are flexible, compact, lighter, based on biodegradable materials and at a lower cost.

The flexible electronic project is part of project 156 approved by the Faculty of Chemistry of Uadec. This project is essentially aimed at developing flexible electronic devices exploiting different energy sources, "said Dr. Jorge Roberto Oliva Uc, professor at Conacyt University, Department of Ceramic Materials, Faculty of Chemical Sciences.

Currently, electronic devices are stiffer, heavier, made with metals and Flexible electronics tries to replace all these electronic parts with other elements that work the same way but are lighter and environmentally friendly. As part of the Conacyt Chair, specialists are working on a device that captures the heat of the human body and converts it into electricity.

In this direction, the human body works like a battery. This device uses this energy, source of human heat, to turn it into electricity and to power another mobile device that could be a calculator, a clock, and we are currently working to make it efficient enough to power a mobile phone, "explained Oliva Uc.

Advantages and disadvantages of the prototype:

The researchers have the prototype at the lab level and says that this device represents a cost advantage.

According to our estimates, a long-lasting 1.5V battery usually costs up to 20 pesos, is bulky, heavy and stiff. The device developed as part of this research is flexible, noticeable to a liner or fabric and can cost up to 80 pesos per square meter. You must therefore evaluate the amount of current and the total voltage that can produce this square meter and calculate how many commercial batteries are equivalent to 1.5 V or 9 V ", said Oliva Uc.

Scientists have indicated that have reached very promising levels from the production of energy in the prototype at the laboratory level compared to the reported literature.
