According to Directory of morbidity of the Directorate General of Epidemiology, cases of type 2 diabetes in Mexico have increased significantly since 2000. In 2017, 114.93 cases of diabetes mellitus had increased.

States like Chiapas, Zacatecas, Aguascalientes, Sonora and Colima the rate of type 2 diabetes has increased, exceeding 100% between 2000 and 2017.

5 states increased cases of diabetes mellitus by more than 100%

Chiapas Top of the list of states with the highest increase of cases of diabetes mellitus. In 2000, the incidence of the state was 111.69%, compared to 357.97% last year. This means an increase of 212.12%.

For its part, Zacatecas registered an increase of 129.84 per 100,000. The figures for 2000 were 213.33 per 100,000, up from 313.13 per 100,000 in 2017.

As, Aguascalientes, had an incidence of 319.8 cases of type 2 diabetes in 2000 and in 2017, the presence was 645.77, the previous indicates an increase of 101.97%.

Sonora it is one of the states where the incidence of type 2 diabetes is highest.In 2000, 197.14% of the incidence was recorded, but in 2017, they reached 396.79% . This translates into 101% growth in cases.

Fifth place in states with the highest number of cases of type 2 diabetes is Colima, whose figures in 2000 were 183.12 per 100,000 cases. For 2017, the numbers rose to 366.52, which means a 100.15% increase in the incidence of cases.

In addition, the states of Veracruz, Sinaloa, Tlaxcala, Oaxaca, State of Mexico, Hidalgo, Nuevo León, Chihuahua, San Luis Potosí, Jalisco and Nayarit, had an increase above the national average in type 2 diabetes.

States that have decreased their incidence of type 2 diabetes

On the other hand, the states of Yucatan, Guerrero, Queretaro, Morelos, Quintana Roo and Baja California Sur, presented a decrease in cases of diabetes mellitus.

At the national level, 287.19 cases of type 2 diabetes mellitus occurred in 2000; 405.12 cases of type 2 diabetes mellitus in 2017. Finally, the incidence of type 2 diabetes in the country increased by 41.06%.
