Liver cancer is one of the most common and deadly diseases in the world and, in most cases, it is at an advanced stage at the time of diagnosis. Therefore, early diagnosis is important to prolong the life of patients.

As early cancer can be detected by observing the alteration of methylation of DNA in the blood, scientists from the Institute of Nutrition and Shanghai Health of the 39, Chinese Academy of Sciences has systematically analyzed the DNA methylation characteristics of 375 samples of liver cancer patients, 50 normal liver samples and 3,780 samples of patients with other types of cancer.

Potential biological markers of liver cancer diagnosis and established a predictive model. The results showed that the model had a 92 percent success rate in predicting liver cancer.

The research offers a new solution for the early diagnosis of liver cancer in the future. The team noted that subsequent research based on this discovery had already been undertaken.

The research was published in the journal "Genome Medicine".
