MANILA, Philippines – Exactis, a marketing company operating out of Palm Coast, Florida, has left personal information of about 340 million people and businesses exposed in a database on an accessible server to the public.

According to a Wired report, about two terabytes of data were exposed, and it appeared to include personal information on hundreds of millions of American adults, as well as millions of businesses.

The financial information and social security numbers did not appear to be part of the database, although a wide range of characteristics are part of the leak. These included phone numbers, home addresses, e-mail addresses and other personal characteristics of the names listed, as well as a person's interests and habits, including number, age and age. sex of the children of a person.

Vinny Troia of Night Lion Security – who discovered the leak – said the mine of information appears to be "a database containing just about every American citizen."

Troia added, "I do not know where the data comes from, but it's one of the most comprehensive collections I have ever seen."

Troia contacted Exactis and the FBI about the exposed database, with Exactis continuing to protect the data and make it inaccessible.

Wired, meanwhile, independently verified a sample of data from the overall production, confirming the authenticity of the data, although in some cases what was disclosed was out of date or inaccurate. – Rappler.com
