Diseases transmitted by the Aedes mosquito, dengue zika and chikungunya threaten more than half of the world's population and affect millions of people every year, including death. In Brazil, Dr Ricardo Palacios of the Butantan Institute has developed a new dengue vaccine, which he presented to BUAP at the first international symposium on emerging infectious diseases. Zika, Dengue and Chikungunya: challenges and opportunities.
This research is now helping to predict the emergence of a new dengue vaccine following Dr. Palacios' large-scale (Phase 3) clinical trial of 16,000 vaccines. , whose results are expected. in some months.
After three days of work, the first International Symposium on Emerging Infectious Diseases has been completed at BUAP. Zika, Dengue and Chikungunya: Challenges and Opportunities, a forum organized by Oxford University, in collaboration with the Institution, which brought together world-renowned researchers from the United Kingdom, the United States and Brazil, leaders of the three cited the advances in their research in feedback with their Mexican counterparts.
"The objective of this symposium was to bring together leading researchers in the study of these three diseases, but also to promote the exchange of ideas for the development of new methods to prevent them, to put these researchers in charge. contact with their Mexican peers and generate projects that lead to solutions, "said Arturo Reyes Sandoval, a researcher at the University of Oxford.
In addition to public policy strategies, he highlighted the relevance of this symposium for finding solutions to dengue, Zika and Chikungunya in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. "Scientific research is the most important tool for finding solutions: medicines, vaccines, prevention and treatment."
Among the researchers who participated in this forum, from October 25 to 27, in the Carolino building of BUAP, are Gavin Screaton, head of the Division of Medical Sciences at Oxford University, who has been discovering for many years many of mechanisms that lead to the pathology of dengue and zika. Nicole Zitzmann, from the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Oxford, a world-renowned scientist, who works on developing new drug methodologies to prevent viral diseases. And Ricardo Palacios, from the Butantan Institute, considered one of the best research centers in the world, with infrastructure for vaccine production and testing.
Dengue, zika and chikungunya are practically present throughout Mexico, mainly on the coasts, in the Pacific and the Gulf of Mexico, as well as in the south-east of the country. On average, according to reported figures, approximately 11,000 cases are detected each year in Mexico. Dengue, more than 20,000 infected people. The probability of death for people with severe dengue fever is 3% of the total.
