The highest homicide rate in the history of the country

CITY OF MEXICO.- With a total of 15,973 people killed in the first six months of 2018, the country accumulates a rate of of 11.01 homicides per hundred thousand inhabitants, higher since there are official figures, displacing the violent first half of 2011 with 9.7 murders.

The criminal incidence data updated by the Executive Secretariat of the National System of Public Security (Sesnsp) show that 2,668 June were recorded victims of intentional homicide. With that, the first half of 2018 ended with an average of 88.7 murders committed daily, or 3.7 crimes per hour.

The murders recorded from January to June of this year have given way to the opening of 13,738 investigation records by the crime of intentional homicide across the country, representing a rate of of 11.01 cases per hundred thousand inhabitants.

Compared to the first half of 2017, where there was a semi-annual rate of 9.66 homicides per hundred thousand inhabitants, in 2018, this index increased to 14%.

Homicide violence in the country accumulates three years on the rise. While in the first half of 2015, the rate of intentional homicides was 6.3 cases per 100,000 population, for the same period of 2016, the rate was 7.4 cases and for 2017 the rate reached 9.6 cases

. means that in a period of only three years (from 2015 to 2018) homicides in the country rebounded by 74%.

Evolution

Regarding the evolution of intentional homicides in 2018, in June the number of victims of this crime was 2,668, just under May, which was 2,894 cases. On average, the monthly number of murders has always been between 2,000 and 3,000.

This is also the month when the highest number of homicides was recorded, displacing the one in 2011 where a little more than 2,000 homicides have been reported.

Colima tops the list of the most violent states with 40.02 investigation records on intentional homicide per hundred thousand inhabitants; Baja California follows with 35.61; Guerrero with 31.67; Chihuahua, 22.58, and Guanajuato, 20.21

Meanwhile, the states that recorded the lowest rate of intentional killings in the first half of 2018 are Yucatán, Hidalgo, Campeche, Aguascalientes, Coahuila and Durango.

They have been growing steadily since 2015, when this illegal act began to officially register. In the first half of 2018, 402 victims of this crime were registered in the country. In the same period, but last year there were 363 cases, which equates to an increase of 10.7%.

In the first half of 2015, the figure was 184 cases of femicide. This means that in three years this crime has tripled.

Colima, Chihuahua, Guerrero, Zacatecas and Sinaloa are the states with the highest rates of femicide in the first half of 2018, with a rate of 1.3 to 1.8 murders for every one hundred thousand women – Political Animal
